Here we are…. 2017, which means it is the perfect time to take a brief look back at the events of the past year in the cyber security world. Let’s face it, there has not been a dull moment…
Between 2015 and 2016 the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau reported that the UK had kissed goodbye to a whopping £10.9bn due to cyber hacks. With the Christmas period only shortly behind us, experts estimated up to one million attacks were targeted against UK retailers alone.
The festive period is always the prime time for hackers to strike. With every man and his dog eager to find the best Christmas bargain on the net, shoppers are far more likely to fall victim to online shopping scams, bank fraud and phishing emails. These attacks are looking increasingly authentic and it is predicted that 1 in 10 adults in the UK fell victim to one of these scams last year.
With hacker’s infiltrating government systems and using cloned emails to obtain 50,000 personal details a day, the government publicly recognised cybercrime as a national security risk. Amidst the incessant cyber-attacks aimed at government bodies, FTSE’s, SME’s and even NHS Trusts, they announced a plan to invest £1.9 billion into a new cyber security strategy.
During an interview with the Telegraph, MP Ben Gummer warned that cybercrime is no longer the distant threat once posed in ‘spy thrillers and action movies’, the UK’s billion pound investment plan shows that cybercrime is the real fear of the here and now.
As these cyber felons are finding more sophisticated methods to infiltrate a company’s infrastructure, cybercrime is considered to be one of the biggest dangers for companies worldwide. The global cost is predicted to be an enormous $445 billion… and there has never been a greater time to ensure that your security system is able to accommodate this risk.
