Behind the scenes at Equilibrium Security- Part 1

Like many businesses, it is the people behind the Equilibrium name that make it a success. This is not just success in terms of business achievements, but in terms of technical excellence, customer satisfaction and the commitment to making a real difference for each individual client. Here at Equilibrium we don’t want to be a faceless organisation. Our employees work hard to provide industry leading cyber security services and the highest customer service, which is why we are keen to show you what we bring to the table. Please read on to find out what goes on behind the scenes for our Cyber Security experts on a day to day basis.

Meet Nick Creed, Senior Cyber Security Engineer:

Nick is one of our Senior Cyber Security consultants and has been with the business for a good few years now. He is very much part of the furniture! Nick is a Cisco security expert and has many years’ experience designing and implementing complex security solutions such as Cisco Firepower and Cisco ISE (as well as many other technologies). Nick is Cisco CCNP Security certified as well as having a Master Security specialisation for Cisco Firejumper Stage 5 for the network security area.

A day in the life of Nick often consists of attending customer workshops to scope, design (and then implement) tailored security solutions for our nationwide client base. In a nutshell, he is the Equilibrium ‘problem solver’. If there is complex technical issue which needs to be resolved, he is your man! He is also a complete perfectionist and a stickler for detail, which is exactly what you need to be when you are responsible for securing business critical systems and data.

Outside of work you will find Nick cycling (BMX, road and MTB), in the fast lane at track days and cruising on his longboard along Santa Monica beach. However, landscape gardening, amateur photography and enjoying an occasional Nespresso often seems to be more of a reality.

What has Nick been up to recently?

Over the last couple of weeks, he has been working with a customer who provides engineering services across 6 continents into a variety of industries. Each global service centre has a Cisco ASA firewall at the internet perimeter. We are currently in the process of migrating them to use Cisco Firepower. This enables them to take advantage of next generation services such as IPS, Malware control, and URL filtering.

To ensure the upgrades are as seamless as possible, we have introduced a small pool of additional hardware acting as rolling spares. This allows the replacement devices to be pre-staged before being shipped to site. The new hardware arrives fully configured and allows smart hands at the remote location to simply cutover to the new solution by moving cables from the old appliance to the new appliance. The existing hardware is then returned to Equilibrium, where it is re-imaged and configured, ready to be installed at the next batch of sites.

For this process to run smoothly, we work closely with our client, capturing all the required information and device access in advance. The information contained within the purpose-built migration capture document, forms the basis of knowledge sharing to other engineers who may support the solution going forwards.

In addition to the security features delivered using Cisco Firepower Threat Defence, we are adding AnyConnect remote access to all service centres as part of the migration programme. This allows end users to connect to local resources securely, when working remotely using public networks. After the migration we continue to offer a managed service to this customer and provide add/moves/changes, central policy enforcement and reporting.
